Union Organizing

Organize for yourself.

Organize for your family.

Organize because it's your right.

Organize because you must.

"All that serves labor serves the nation. All that harms is treason..... if a man tells you he loves America, yet hates labor, he is a liar.... There is no America without labor, and to fleece one is to rob the other." - Abraham Lincoln

"Let the workers organize. Let the toilers assemble. Let the crystallized voice proclaim their injustices and demand their privileges. Let all thoughtful citizens sustain them, for the future of labor is the future of America." - United Mine Workers President John L. Lewis

"Only a fool would try to deprive working men and women of the right to join the union of their choice." - Dwight D. Eisenhower

"No business which depends for existence on paying less than living wages to its workers has any right to continue in this country. By living wages I mean more than subsistence level. I mean the wages of decent living." - Franklin Delano Roosevelt, 1933

According to the National Labor Relations Act of 1935, employees shall have the right under section 7 to self organize, to form, or assist labor organizations, to bargain collectively through representatives of their own choosing, and to engage in other concerted activities for the purpose of collective bargaining or other mutual aid or protection.

What does this mean?

  • It means that employees have the right to help organize, to join and to support a union of their own choosing. This includes such activities as signing a union card, getting others to sign cards, attending union meetings, wearing union buttons, passing out union literature and talking about the union to other employees.
  • It states that employees have the legal right to join together and work as a team in order to help each other.
  • It says that employees have the legal right to deal with their employer as a group, rather than individually.
  • It gives employees the legal right to take such group action as they feel necessary in order to gain their desired goals so long as these actions violate no other laws.
  • It does not mean that employees have the right to carry on union activity during working hours or to allow their union activity to interfere with their jobs. ( For this purpose, break time and lunch time are not considered as working hours.)
